Abstract
The drought resistant grain sorghum cv. C 42y showed higher leaf water potentials and leaf diffusive resistance during drought stress than the normal cv. E 59. Diurnal changes in leaf water potential were similar with and without irrigation, and unirrigated plots showed lower leaf-water potential and slower night recovery of potential. Diffusive resistances were high in the early morning and late afternoon but low at other times unless drought stress was severe. Diffusive resistance of C 42y was higher than in E 59 at resistances below -19 bar, decreasing the water loss and leading to higher water potential. The greatest effect of drought stress on grain yield was given by stress at booting
