Abstract
Sorghum pollen observed in vitro on styles of detached maize ovaries under sterile conditions was able to grow but failed to fertilize the ovule due to the limited growth of the pollen tubes or when grown on shorter styles due to the lack of stigmatic hairs at the base of the maize style. Direct pollination of maize ovules by sorghum pollen resulted in rapid growth of nucellar tissue but no embryo or endosperm development. Using this technique of direct pollination, naked embryos with endosperm were obtained from crosses of maize X maize and maize X Euchlaena mexicana
