Abstract
Tabulated data are presented on the presence of pigmentation, the rate of callus growth and the capacity to regenerate plants in 15 sorghum strains. Of these strains, GPR168 responded best to conditions for callus formation, the cells showing mitotic indices of 1.0-6.5% during 96 h of subculturing. Plant regeneration occurred in M35, from callus derived from shoot segments, and in NK300, from callus derived from 12-15-day-old embryos. Polyploidization was evident from a study of callus, cell-suspension cultures and regenerated plants.A fast-growing cell culture of Black Mexican sweet corn had a cell doubling time of 48 h and mitotic indices ranging from 3.6 to 10.9% over 72 h. An average of 52% of isolated protoplasts were multinucleate; cell walls were regenerated by some protoplasts during subsequent culture
