Abstract

Foliage application of 2.8 mu g glyphosate/plant to glasshouse-grown sorghum cv. 'Tophand' seedlings caused an increase in their fresh wt. As glyphosate levels were increased to 11.2 mu g/plant, the diam. of the basal growth zone increased but the fresh wt. of the whole plant decreased. In growth chamber studies with sorghum and wheat cv. 'Era' seedlings, glyphosate caused the greatest reduction in fresh wt. at the optimum growth temps. for both species. Glyphosate inhibited the production of basal buds in wheat at the optimum growth temp. and stimulated bud production at temps. above this. Under normal growth conditions, basal buds in sorghum do not develop; however, the application of glyphosate stimulated basal bud development under normal and above-normal temps. Histochemical analysis of malate dehydrogenase activity in apical meristem tissue of treated sorghum seedlings showed that the growth of the apex was normal
