Abstract
The vigour of 9 samples of sorghum seeds was tested by the following methods: germination test procedure, accelerated ageing test, rate of root and shoot growth, cold test emergence in sand-soil mixture and field emergence test. It was shown that high germination percentage in seed samples was not the only criterion for measuring physiological quality and the use of other supplementary tests, viz. accelerated ageing, cold test, seedling growth, etc., could ensure better assessment of seed vigour. Prolonged ageing beyond 72 h at 45 deg C and 100% RH was detrimental to sorghum seed; reducing the period of stress or minimizing the temp. and RH could bring back the normal ageing condition for this kind of seed
