Abstract
Leaf blade tissue analyses for potential HCN production were carried out on 11 medium-late or late maturing grain sorghum hybrids 10, 14 or 18 days after sowing in growth-chamber trials and at weekly intervals from 27 to 122 days after sowing in field trials. In the growth chamber, average potential HCN levels dropped sharply from 7600 ppm at 10 days to 3890 ppm at 14 days and 4050 ppm at 18 days. Ranking order at 10 days was different from that at 14 and 18 days. In the field, potential HCN levels declined after sowing until day 111, and then dropped further to low levels as maturity was reached. The correlations between levels at 27, 34 and subsequent dates before maturity and the mean levels over all dates were significant (r = 0.67, 0.75 and 0.85-0.95). Among the 11 hybrids, DeKalb F-66a had the highest (3133 ppm) and Northrup King 285 the lowest (1607 ppm) mean level. Sorghum hybrids given 180-274 kg N/ha had potential leaf HCN well above the danger threshold of 200 ppm until maturity, but on N-deficient soil leaf HCN levels had declined to 100 ppm or lower at the soft dough stage
