Abstract
Female calves, 18 Ayrshire and 24 Holstein, had a starter feed from 3 days old, and whole milk at 8% of bodyweight till the 6th week. At 8 weeks old they were given a mixture containing 60% sorghum grain, dry rolled or micronized, density 380 or 230 g/litre. Soya bean oilmeal was sufficient to bring total protein of the ration to about 18%. Bulk was provided by 15% ground lucerne hay. The trial lasted for 8 weeks; rumen fluid was sampled in the 4th, 5 h after feeding. Digestibility of the 3 feeds was tested with 9 male calves, Holstein or Ayrshire, 4 to 6 weeks old. Mean weight gains of the female calves were 46.9, 46.0 and 43.8 kg, respectively; average feed intake was least and feed efficiency was best with the micronized sorghum. Molar percentages of rumen volatile fatty acids were about the same in the 3 groups. Apparent digestibility of DM and organic matter was slightly greater with micronized sorghum. Digestibility of crude protein and of starch differed little between groups
