Abstract
Male Wistar rats weighing 90 to 100 g, in 4 groups of 24 rats, were given for 6 weeks a 10% casein control diet or a diet with 5, 10 or 15% protein from defatted millet flour, when 6 rats from each group were given by injection a saline solution of acetate-1-14C, palmitate-1-14C, glucose-U-14C or NaH232PO4 and were killed and adipose tissue lipids were taken. All amounts of millet flour in the diet significantly raised adipose tissue cholesterol above control values, most in the 10% millet protein group. Rats given millet at 5% protein level had significantly higher adipose tissue phospholipids. Incorporation of NaH232PO4 into adipose tissue phospholipids fell significantly in rats given 10 or 15% millet but was not significantly different in controls and rats on 5% millet diet. Incorporation of acetate into cholesterol rose significantly in the 5% millet group, fell in the 15% millet group and was unchanged in the 10% millet group. Incorporation of palmitate into cholesterol of 10% and 15% millet groups and that of glucose into cholesterol of 15% millet group fell significantly compared with controls. Incorporation of acetate and palmitate into adipose tissue rose significantly in the 5 and 10% millet groups. Lipogenesis from glucose rose significantly above control values in millet-fed rats, particularly in those on 5% millet. Utilisation of palmitate for triglyceride synthesis and glucose for acetyl CoA production was greater in millet-fed rats than in controls
