Abstract
Diets of similar proximate analysis based on sorghum forage and primarily supplemented with 18.4% aerobically digested municipal waste (garbage diet) or 17.5% cottonseed husks (control diet) were ensiled for 52 days and then given individually for 56 days and by group for 35 days to 16 dairy heifers. Average apparent digestibilities of the 2 diets were DM 54.2 and 47.4, crude protein 50.0 and 41.3, ether extract 62.0 and 65.1, crude fibre 53.1 and 42.3, and N-free extract 61.8 and 54.5%, as estimated by the Cr2O3 technique. DM intake was 12% lower on the garbage than on the control diet, giving daily bodyweight gains of 0.42 and 0.57 kg during the 56-day period and requiring DM 13.9 and 11.8 kg/kg gain. Over the whole 91 days average daily gain was 0.62 kg for the control diet, compared with 0.47 kg from the garbage diet
