Abstract

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) is the most important vegetable crop in India, which suffers from several diseases. Alternaria blight incited Alternaria alternata causes severe yield losses under congenial condition. Considering the importance of the crop and the disease, the study was undertaken to evaluate the fungicides. Relative efficacy of seven fungicides viz., chlorothalonil, copper oxychloride, azoxystrobin, Propineb, copper hydroxide, mancozeb was tested at 2500, 2000, 5 000, 500 and 250 ppm while hexaconazole was tested at 1000, 500, 200. 100 and 50 ppm by poisoned food technique. Five mm circular disc from 7 days old culture of the pathogen was cut by sterilized cork borer and placed in the centre of each fungicide seeded Petri dish in such a way that the fungus came in direct contact with the medium. The inoculated plates were incubated for 7 days at 25–28°C and radial growth of the fungus colony were measured. The observations revealed that all the fungicides tested significantly reduced the radial growth of the fungus significantly. However, hexaconazole was very effective as it caused 100% growth inhibition. The remaining fungicides too reduced growth effectively and differed from each other significantly. Mancozeb and copper, oxychloride reduced to 70% fungal growth (Kushwaha & Narain. 2001). Raut and Patil (2005) reported bordeaux mixture and bavistin were quite effective in controlling root rot and wilt of tomato.
