Abstract
Six sorghum cultivars, covering a wide range of height, yield, grain:forage ratio and seed tannin content (resisant or susceptible to bird damage), were studied. The digestibilities of CP, CF and NFE in silages from these cultivars were evaluated using 3 Hereford steers and the silage was fed with or without a grain supplement. Ensiling additives were also studied. Results indicated that cultivars with a high seed tannin content should not be used for silage as the DCP was very low. It was concluded that cultivars of medium height yielding 16-20 ton digestible silage/ac were likely to make good sources of roughage when grain was fed at a minimum level of 40% of the ration. Additives using carbohydrates were not recommended because sorghum silages were deficient in fermentable carbohydrates
