Abstract

The testa colours of the varieties used were red, flesh or white. Flesh colour is dominant to white giving a 15: 1 ratio. Red is dominant to flesh giving a 3: 1 ratio; the flesh pigment must be present before red can develop. The two white varieties used had different genotypes. Philippine White has the red and flesh factors in the recessive condition but carries a pair of dominant duplicate factors necessary for the development of colour; Pearl lacks the latter factors but carries the dominant factors for red and flesh.
