Abstract
In the Philippines, several varieties of sorghum were examined in the field and in the storehouse for damage by insect pests normally occurring during storage. Sitophilus zeamais Motsch. and Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) were observed in the field up to 28 days before harvest, and these and Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) were the principal pests during storage. Spraying the sorghum plants with tetrachlorvinphos, pirimiphos-methyl or malathion before harvest in the dry and wet seasons permitted the resulting grain to be stored for 3 and 2 months, respectively, without further treatment during storage, the first compound giving the most protection against insects and the last compound the least. Grain sprayed before harvest that was afterwards stored in sacks impregnated with the insecticides mentioned was protected from insect infestation for longer (about 6 months) than was sprayed grain stored in untreated sacks or unsprayed grain stored in treated sacks. During field or storehouse attacks, the beetles consistently preferred 2 of the tested sorghum varieties to the third.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:In the field and in storage, both insects preferred Cosor 1 to Cosor 2 or Cosor 3, possibly because of the harder endosperm of Cosor 2 and 3 and the higher protein content of Cosor 1
