Abstract

The rates of development and reproduction of Heliothis armigera (Hb.) on 12 food-plants representing 7 families are described. A comparison of net reproductive rates showed that the best food was cotton flower buds, followed by cotton leaves, groundnut leaves, sunflower heads, green beans (Phaseolus), rose petals, potato leaves, lucerne leaves, grain sorghum ears, maize cobs and tomato leaves, in that order. Larvae did not survive on tobacco, and many of those reared on maize succumbed to a virus disease
