Abstract
A survey was carried out on some plants like groundnut and potatoes for the support of fungal growth. Fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Penicillium chrysogenum, Aspergillus terreus, Aspergillus glaucus, Fusarium oxysporium, and Rhizopus stolonifer were isolated from food materials using Standard Blotter Method. Pure cultures were obtained on Potato Dextrose, and Groundnut Dextrose Broths respectively, to screen their suitability for culturing fungi. After incubation at 27±1OC for 7 days, the organisms were harvested, weighed and growth rate measured. The values for all the organisms in Groundnut Dextrose were significantly higher than those in Potato Dextrose Broth. Groundnut Dextrose Broth, supported the growth of organisms better than Potato Dextrose Broth probably because they are rich in nutrients, providing over 30 essential nutrients and phytonutrients. And are good sources of niacin, folate, fiber, magnesium, vitamin E, manganese and phosphorus. They also are naturally free of trans-fats and sodium, and contain about 25% protein (a higher proportion than in any true nut).
