Abstract
In a trial during 2 years, dwarf sorghum cv. RS 610 was given all combinations of 0, 50 or 100 kg N applied in 2 equal split dressings at sowing and 45 days later and 0, 50 or 100 kg P2O5/ha applied at sowing, and was sown at 10, 20 or 30 cm between plants in rows 50 cm apart. After the sorghum was harvested, fodder oats were sown without additional fertilizer. Sorghum utilized 32% and 29% of the 100 kg N and 25% and 12% of the 50 kg N rate applied in the 1st and 2nd years, respectively. The respective values for the sorghum + oats were 38% and 43% of the 100 kg N and 28% and 15% for the 50 kg N rate. The low recovery was attributed to leaching losses of N applied at sowing and the fact that N uptake was greatest in the middle and later stages of growth of the sorghum. It was concluded that 10-15 kg N/ha should be applied at sowing and the remainder 25-30 days later.
