Abstract
Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cress.), a native parasite of Schizaphis graminum (Rond.), was reared on the aphid infesting grain sorghum in the greenhouse in Oklahoma in 1972-73, acclimatised on plant material at 5 deg C for storage, and transported (in aphid mummies) by air to Lubbock, Texas, for release in sorghum fields when the population level of the aphid was below 12 examples/plant. Emergence of parasite adults was better than predicted, but release points were not sufficiently close together. In plots where 14 000 and 28 000 parasites/acre were released, aphid populations did not increase to damaging levels as rapidly as they did in plots where 7000/acre were released and in control (untreated) plots. Counts of mummies indicated that parasite populations were large in release plots. In plots having both parasite releases (of 14 000 or 28 000/acre) and insecticide applications, grain yields were significantly higher than those in control plots. Aphelinus asychis Wlk., an imported aphid parasite, and native predators were not effective in preventing Schizaphis damage. The presence of corn leaf aphids [Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch)], another host of L. testaceipes, did not aid the establishment of the parasite
