Abstract
The performance of 9 lines, 4 male sterile lines and 5 inbred lines of pearl millet under drought stress (imposed by withholding irrigation from the boot leaf stage until maturity) was evaluated in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India, during the summer of 1999 and 2001. The male sterile line 95444B and the inbred line J 2340 recorded the lowest number of days to flowering (58.7 and 58.8) and drought susceptibility index (0.812±0.06 and 0.761±0.18), and the highest grain yield (628.9 and 806.7 kg/ha), harvest index (22.4 and 18.1%) and threshing percentage (47.7 and 44.4%). These lines, which also had high relative water contents (74.2 and 77.8%), were considered drought-resistant. Under water stress, yield was positively correlated with harvest index but was negatively associated with number of days to flowering. J 108 also appeared to be a drought-tolerant inbred line.
