Abstract
During Nov. 1972 the winter season sorghum cvs. M 35-1 and Mugati Jola developed horizontal splits above the 2nd or 3rd nodes, causing bending or even snapping of affected stalks. Nearly 13% of the plants were affected and 7% showed toppling and drying, with 7% loss in yield. Damage was not associated with any pathogen and was attributed to extremely high Oct. temps. (38.9-40 deg C for 17 days) and a dry period (44 days) followed by heavy rain
