Abstract
The disease, described, observed in Kanpur since 1971, is characterized by reddish brown straight stripes up to 18 X 0.5 cm on the leaves and leaf sheaths, and complete or partial top rot due to a brown rot of the leaf whorl. The pathogen resembles the Erwinia carotovora group in being phytopathogenic and in the lack of acid production from adonitol. In inoculation tests it also infected Echinochloa frumentacea, rice, Paspalum scrobiculatum, Pennisetum typhoides, Setaria glauca, S. italica, Sorghum halepense and maize. The disease and its pathogen are considered new and further studies on the identification of the latter are in progress
