Abstract

Only 19 sorghum entries, out of 518 tested, were resistant in 3 screening trials with conidia and oospores of Sclerospora sorghi. Oospore formation could be induced in some maize vars. which did not produce them in nature. There was no nuclear division in either conidiophore or conidia, only migration of nuclei being observed; 22 nuclei occurred in a mature conidium. Morphology of asexual structures was highly modified by treatment with IAA, 2,4-D and NAA. With NAA conidiophores appeared like those of Peronospora. Colchicine induced nuclear disintegration. Ten amino acids were noted in the asexual phase. Conidia were produced nocturnally; none was formed on leaves sampled at 2-6 am. Leaves sampled in the morning required a longer incubation period
