Abstract

A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of gamma radiation on Xanthium pensylvanicum, Sorghum halepense, Ipomoea sp. and Amaranthus retroflexus seeds. Using a 60Co source delivering 18.5 R/s, exposure times were adjusted to obtain soil surface radiation levels of 25-800 kR. Seeds were placed at depths of 0, 0.5 and 1 in in a sandy loam soil and germination and growth responses were evaluated in the glasshouse. There was a more pronounced effect on viability than on germination. Estimated L50 radiation levels after 60 days were 40, 45, 55 and 110 kR, respectively, for A. retroflexus, X. pensylvanicum, S. halepense and Ipomoea sp. From summary
