Abstract

Five experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of preemergence herbicides For sorghum on sandy soil. Herbicides which consistently gave good pigweed and annual grass control with minimum crop injury were Igran, Ramrod, Milogard, Herban, Milogard + Ramrod, and Igran + Ramrod. The most severe injury to sorghum occurred where 0.40 inch of rain fell within 10 days after treatments on a fine sandy loam soil. Less injury occurred in a more sandy soil where 2 to 3 inches of sprinkler irrigation was applied the day following treatment. Irrigation may have decreased crop injury by leaching the herbicides below the crop seed zone
