Abstract
The experiment was conducted with ten cultivars of sweet sorghum to know the ethanol recovery and biochemical composition from stalk juice and grain. At physiological maturity, maximum recovery of ethanol(9.12%) was obtained from the stalk juice of NSS-208, which was found to be highest in total sugar (17.40%) and lowest in reducing sugar (1.46%). The AKSSV-24 cultivar was also showed higher ethanol.recovery (9.03%). The significantly superior grain starch content were reported by NSS-104 (72.5%) and Keller (71.6 %) which ultimately turned to maximum yield of grain ethanol Le. 44.96 and 44.57 %respectively. Further biochemical analysis of grain revealed that maximum amylose and amylopectin were found· in NSS-I04 followed by Keller, as well as NSS-104 found significantly superior in fat content (4.3%). Maximum content of phenol was observed in BJ-248 (0.7%). Amongst all, grain malt of BJ-248 recorded highest diastatic power (45.82. DUg-1) followed by NSS-04 (41.65 DUg-1). The analysis of bagasse remained after extraction of juice reported that cellulose and lignin content was maximum in bagasse of NSS-104 where as highest percentage of hemicellulose was obtained in bagasse of Wray.
