Abstract

Ecological studies on the crop-weed association of kharif-grown jowar (Sorghum vulgare [= S. bicolor]) were undertaken at 2 sites near Rajkot. The seasonal occurrence, distribution, density, cover, biomass, net production and mineral content were examined for the crop plants and for 18 weed species (flowering plants). Fluctuations in weed distribution and density were correlated with seed germination, seedling emergence and weeding operations. Weeds were classified as early, intermediate and late according to the time of emergence. Individually, weeds showed less biomass and net production than the crop plants. The % mineral content of the weeds was higher than that of the crop plants. Competition between crop plants and weeds for minerals occurred from 41 to 80 days after emergence, i.e., up to the time at which the minerals were depleted from the soil
