Abstract
The improvement of crop rotations in 4 zones of the drylands of India was discussed. In the arid region (Zone 1, moisture index -100 to -66) the introduction of sunflower, castor and cowpeas was recommended and sorghum and safflower were were promising crops. Sorghum sown in Sept. gave yields up to 300% higher than when sown later. On some soils cropping with short-duration cultivars was possible during summer in years when the monsoon was early. Cotton and safflower could be introduced in some areas. In the semi-arid region (Zone 2, moisture index -66 to -33) moisture conservation would enable double cropping. In the dry sub-humid region (Zone 3, moisture index -33 to 0) 2 crops/year are easily possible with suitable choice of crop and cultivation techniques. In the sub-humid region (Zone 4, moisture index 0 to 20) double cropping could be replaced by multiple cropping
