Abstract

Maize and grain sorghum hybrids, were grown with more than or equal to 3.25 cm irrigation/week and were followed in the same year by groundnuts, pigeon pea, Phaseolus vulgaris, Vigna unguiculata or soyabean sown between 12 July and 13 Aug. in 1973 and between 12 July and 19 Aug. in 1974. Maize grain yields at 7.2 plants/m2 and rows 91 cm apart were 4.7-7.7 t/ha, the latter from the medium-maturing cv. Pioneer 3369A, which at 9.6 plants/m2 in rows and 46 cm apart in 1974 yielded 7.96 t/ha. Sorghum grain yields were 3.5-6.3 t/ha and were higher with 46 than with 91 cm between rows. Of the 2nd crops, groundnuts yielded up to 4.66 t/ha, V. unguiculata up to 1.83 t/ha, and soyabeans up to 4.19 t/ha. Pigeon peas failed to reach maturity, the crop of 7.49 t shoot DM/ha being suitable for green manure. P. vulgaris matured well at all sowing dates but disease caused low yields
