Abstract
Removal of all mature leaf laminae of rice cv. Pelita I/2 5 wks after transplanting had no effect on yield, plant height or panicle wt., but continuous defoliation from 3 wks after transplanting to flag-leaf emergence significantly reduced yields, the total wt. of panicles/plant decreasing from 28.7 g to 16.1 g at 75% defoliation. Ear wt. was not significantly reduced by removal of laminae from maize cv. BC1 3 wks after sowing, but complete defoliation at 3 and 6 wks reduced grain yield from 151 to 33 g/plant. Only 100% defoliation of sorghum cv. STB 458 at 5 and 10 wks after sowing reduced seed yield/panicle significantly. The effect of removing each emerging leaf of soyabean cv. Taichung, Sumbing and No.945 was significant, 50% defoliation of No.945 reducing seed yield/plant from 12.0 to 3.1 g. Daily defoliation of groundnut cv. Gajah from emergence to blooming and from blooming to harvest significantly reduced wt. and number of pods and seeds but not average seed wt. It is suggested that the effects of severe foliage losses caused by leaf-feeding insects may have relatively little effect on crop yields and that yield losses caused by some pests may not justify chemical control
