Abstract
In irrigated trials, 2 sorghum cv. were grown at spacings of (a) 45 X 15, (b) 60 X 11 or (c) 75 X 9 cm. Grain yields at (a), (b) and (c) were 3.6, 3.18 and 2.97 t/ha, resp., in cv. Swarna and 2.64, 3.54 and 1.93 t in cv. M 35-1. Water use efficiency at (a), (b) and (c) was 79.1, 72.3 and 69.9 kg grain/cm water, resp., in Swarna and 65.9, 84.2 and 50.9 kg in M 35-1. Yields and water use efficiency in Swarna were significantly increased by thinning 2 or 3 wk after emergence, compared with thinning 1 or 4 wk after emergence
