Abstract
Sorghum cv. RS-610, H-610, M-35-1, 1136-1 and 1136-3 were grown in soil in controlled environment and submitted to 2 consecutive soil drying cycles separated by a 3-day recovery period. Stomata of previously stressed plants were less sensitive to reduction in soil water potential than those of plants not previously stressed, and their leaf water potential at a given soil water potential was also lower. In plants not previously stressed, the stomata responded sensitively to an initial reduction in leaf water potential, but once closure was initiated (at about -8 bar leaf water potential) the stomata remained partly closed (25-33% of maximum aperture) even when leaf water potential fell to -19 bar. During this phase, control over transpiration was apparently non-stomatal
