Abstract
In the dry season of 1973, 1 kg 2,4-D a.i./ha or 1.7 kg simazine a.i./ha were applied to rice cv. IR8, wheat cv. UP-301, maize cv. Deccan Hybrid, sorghum cv. CSH-1 and soyabean cv. Davis, either post-em. or at 12, 24 or 36 days pre-em. 2,4-D tended to be phytotoxic and reduced germination to 67% compared with 86% for simazine and 100% for the untreated control. Germination percentage and growth rate increased with delayed sowing after herbicide application. Although germination was high with wheat, rice and soyabean under simazine application, they failed to establish. 2,4-D and simazine were less phytotoxic to maize than to other crops
