Abstract

Soaking seeds of maize cv. Double Hybrid Giza 51 and grain sorghum cv. Giza 114 for 24 h in 2.5 ppm ABA, 25, 50 or 100 ppm GA3 or 0.25, 0.5 or 1% thiourea enhanced seedling emergence and percentage germination; 10 ppm ABA delayed germination. GA3 and thiourea increased plant height whereas ABA resulted in cessation of extension growth. GA3 induced earlier silking, tasselling and heading whereas ABA and thiourea had little effect. Maize treated with ABA yielded 3.27-3.58 t grain/ac compared with 2.79 t/ac for untreated maize; sorghum yielded 2.09-2.23 t grain/ac with ABA and 1.41 t/ac without. GA and thiourea had no significant effect on yield
