Abstract
The study was to find the effect of N fertiliser on HCN content of Sudan grass, sweet sorghum, millet and grain sorghum and to compare the effect of N fertiliser on the HCN content of the first and second growths of Sudan grass, sweet sorghum and millet. Plants given a high level of the N fertiliser had more HCN than control forage or plants receiving a low level. HCN was more in the second growth than in the first especially with higher fertiliser. Grain sorghum plants given the high level of N fertiliser had about twice as much HCN as Sudan grass and sweet sorghum and about 3 times as much as in millet. The HCN in Sudan grass at the 15th day after the 1st cut reached the MLD with the highest fertilising rate and HCN poisoning could be expected. When animals were given sweet sorghum or millet with the higher rate of the fertiliser at the same stage, death because of HCN poisoning did not occur
