Abstract
The performance of hybrids derived from crossing 9 male sterile lines in the A4 cytoplasmic male sterility system and 9 R4 restorer lines were evaluated in a field experiment conducted in a field experiment conducted in Queensland, Australia during 2002-03. Significant differences between the grain yield and size of pearl millet hybrids due to the general combining ability of female and male parents were recorded. Hybrids with 4AmRm as male parents performed better compared to other hybrids with different male parents. Line 183A4 and 59041wA4 as female parents and 4AmRm and 4Rm as male parents recorded high general combining ability. Eight pearl millet hybrids recorded higher yields compared to the control pearl millet cultivars and sorghum lines. The pearl millet hybrids recorded earlier maturity compared to the sorghum lines.
