Abstract
In plot trials in 1968-71, crops in 2-crop mixtures were sown at half the rate for pure stands while in 3-crop mixtures kenaf and sorghum were increased to three-quarters the rate for pure stands. Grain yields ranged from 2600 to 7100 lb/ac for maize, from 4600 to 4900 lb for sorghum, from 3800 to 6400 lb for maize/sorghum, from 1200 to 4000 lb for maize/kenaf, from 2400 to 2800 lb for sorghum/kenaf, and from 3000 to 6000 lb/ac for maize/sorghum/kenaf mixtures. Forage DM yields ranged from 7.4 to 16.0 tons/ac for maize, 9.4 to 12.7 tons for sorghum, 8.2 to 12.8 tons for kenaf, 9.2 to 16.3 tons for maize/sorghum, 8.7 to 15.1 tons for maize/kenaf, 8.8 to 12.0 tons for sorghum/kenaf and 11.7 tons for maize/sorghum/kenaf. Correct sowing rates and selection of varieties as to plant maturity, height and aggressiveness were necessary for best growth and utilization of mixtures, the advantage of which lay in more consistent yields than those of pure stands
