Abstract
At Mallawi and Sabahia, Egypt, 10 mature plants of sweet sorghum (Sorghum vulgare [= bicolor] var. saccharatum) cv. Sart were harvested and divided into various parts. Juice was extracted from stems and peduncles, and the residue after extraction and the leaves were made into hay or silage. Yields/feddan were 4.0 t for roots, 16.9 t for stems, 4.4 t for leaves and 0.8 t for peduncles. Yields of juice were 12.7 t/feddan for stems and 0.4 t/feddan for peduncles (1.77 and 0.04 t total sugars/feddan, respectively). The lactic acid content of the silage was 86-89% of the total acidity, and the pH was 3.8-4.2. Loss of nutrients was greater for hay than for silage. Losses from extracted stems and leaves were 22.5 and 11.7% DM and 0.3 and 1.5% CP respectively, for silage compared with 26.5 and 19.4% DM and 0.6 and 2.6% CP for hay. [1 feddan=0.42 ha]
