Abstract

The effect on the protein efficiency ratio (PER) of adding lysine, methionine and threonine, individually or combined, to a poor sorghum diet was studied with groups of 8 weanling rats. The basal diet contained 10.2% protein of which 8.6% was derived from sorghum and 1.32 and 0.3% from red gram and skimmed milk powder, respectively. Sufficient of the amino acids were added to the basal diet to raise their concentrations to those observed in human milk. The PER of the poor diet significantly increased from 2.03 to 2.94 by the lysine supplement and further supplementation with methionine and threonine significantly increased the PER to 3.24. No significant increases were observed when methionine or threonine were added to the basal diet alone or in addition to lysine.-K. M. H
