Abstract

Groups of 8 weanling rats were given poor vegetarian diets, based on sorghum or wheat, to supply 100, 80 or 60% of their energy requirements. The effect of supplementing the diets with 0.8 g Indian Multipurpose Food (a 31 blend of groundnut and chickpea flours fortified with Ca and vitamins) on growth was studied in experiments lasting for 4 weeks At all energy intakes growth increased with the protein supplement but the beneficial effect decreased with decreasing energy intake, the decrease being more with the sorghum than with the wheat diet. It is concluded that maximum benefit from protein supplements will only be obtained after any energy deficit is rectified.-K. M. H
