Abstract
2. Five different low-cost balanced foods based on mixtures of wheat, ragi, sorghum, Bengal gram, groundnut flour and cottonseed flour and adequately fortified with vitamins A and D, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin and Ca salts were prepared. The foods contained from 18.8 to 22.4% protein. Growth studies on weanling rats have shown that replacement of rice, sorghum and ragi in poor Indian diet by the low-cost balanced foods to the extent of 50% made good all the deficiencies in the diet and brought about a significant increase in the mean growth rates of rats from about 7-10 to 14-18 g per week. Complete replacement of the cereal in the diet by the low-cost balanced foods resulted in slightly better growth.-M. N. R.
