Abstract
Weanling rats were given diets of either ragi, kaffir corn or wheat, to each of which were added cottonseed and chickpea. A fourth diet consisted of a mixture of wheat, peanut and chickpea. The proportions were cereal 65, cottonseed or peanut 25 and chickpea 15. Each diet was fortified with calcium, vitamins A and D and riboflavine. Tests were made of the effects of adding to each diet lysine and methionine, or lysine, methionine and threonine. Control groups of animals were fed on skim milk powder. The weight gained by the rats when the diets contained 10% protein, in relation to the amount of protein ingested (PER) was determined. The PER values of the diets ranged from 1.91 to 2.33 before supplementation and from 2.76 to 3.06 after supplementation with lysine, methionine and threonine, compared with a PER value of the skim milk powder diet of 3.00.
