Abstract

Mahalanobis' D2 statistic was used to study genetic diversity among 36 indigenous and exotic varieties which were grouped into nine clusters. The distribution of the varieties was not only associated with geographic diversity, factors such as genetic drift, selection pressure and environment were responsible in maintaining or altering the genetic make-up of a particular variety. Stem thickness contributed most towards total genetic divergence, followed by leaf length and plant height
