Abstract
Three Italian isolates of Ascochyta rabiei, recently collected, were used to evaluate their pathogenicity as well as establishing whether they are new races or pathotypes able to attack chickpea cultivars previously known for their resistance to the pathogen. Eight Italian cultivars (including a local cultivar) and fifty two chickpea cultivar accessions provided by ICARDA were inoculated. The isolates used in our experiments showed a variable degree of virulence. A breakdown of resistance in cultivar Sultano, which is known to be resistant so far to Ascochyta blight, was observed. Furthermore, almost all chickpea genotypes/accessions revealed a high degree of susceptibility towards pathogen isolates except few accessions which were moderately resistant
