Abstract

Studies at Pecos, Texas, of Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) (biotype C) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) suggested that facultative production of alates had 2 main consequences. Alate emigration contributed significantly to the decline of both species on sorghum, and also removed significant numbers of immature primary parasites (such as Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cress.)) within the alates. These results imply the need for concurrent monitoring of alate production and for evaluation of the impact of natural enemies in the field. Direct measurement of alate production on plants gave a more reliable index of migration intensity than did aerial sampling methods, which did not permit distinction between resident and transient aphids
