Abstract
The extension of crop sowing time during dry weather by stubble mulching and water injection was investigated at 4 sites on the Darling Downs, Queensland. Crops tested were wheat, sunflower, sorghum and maize. Crop residues (wheat, barley and sorghum) retained on the soil surface as mulches reduced soil water loss from the seedbed after prolonged drying and increased seedling emergence. This effectively extended sowing time. The extension of sowing time, assuming sowing time to be the period resulting in ≥50% crop emergence, was determined from graphs of emergence vs time. 2000 kg/ha of wheat stubble extended the sowing time of sunflower by 4 days. Water injection at 60 ml/m of row extended sowing time of sorghum, sunflower and maize by up to 2.5 days in dry soil but reduced it under mulch or high soil water levels
