Abstract
In trials under semi-arid conditions in 1975-7 the soil moisture conservation practices used were (a) shallow ploughing with a wooden plough [= cultivator] to 10 cm depth, ploughing with a mouldboard plough to (b) 30 cm depth or (c) 30 cm depth with preparation of 45-cm wide ridges and furrows. (c) was superior to (a) and (b) in conserving soil moisture during the growth period of sorghum and castor [Ricinus communis]. sorghum hybrid CSH-1 and its ratoon crop gave the highest production stability in both below and above av. rainfall yr. Recycling of runoff water was also effective in increasing yields of both crops. The runoff from crops was highest with (a) followed by (c); a reverse trend was observed for soil loss in the runoff water
