Abstract
The variation in Spanish, Virginia and Valencia sub-specific groups consisting of the bunch and spreading types was examined. The spreading types have higher number of pods, pod weight and shelling percentage than the bunch (Virginia and Spanish) types. The oil content and days to first flower are less variable although the spreading types are a little later in flowering. Among the bunch types, the Spanish have better pod characters and the Virginias better seed characteristics. Virginia bunch types have heavier kernels which are longer and broader in size. The maximum potentialities for enhancing groundnut yield exist in combining the desirable pod characters of the Spanish types with the kernel characteristics of Virginia bunch types. Seed size which is highly heritable could be a major component for improving the yield.
