Abstract
Blissus leucopterus leucopterus (Say) is a serious pest of sorghum and maize in south-eastern Nebraska and eastern Kansas, killing seedlings and young plants after migrating from small-grain cereal fields. A laboratory bioassay method was established in Nebraska to provide information on the relative effectiveness of 24 insecticides for the control of this lygaeid. Field-collected adults from Nebraska were directly exposed to the compounds by being confined in a piece of nylon stocking within a plastic tube through which solutions of the compounds at different concentrations were drawn by suction. Other adults were indirectly exposed to the insecticides by being placed on treated filter paper. For direct exposure, the LD50s ranged from 7.64 p.p.m. for permethrin to nearly 500 p.p.m. for toxaphene, and for indirect exposure on filter paper they ranged from 4.81 p.p.m. for terbufos to over 100 p.p.m. for carbophenothion
