Abstract

The metabolizable energy contents of 16 diets fed to 1020 commercial broilers in duplicated groups of 32 chickens were estimated at 5 and 9 weeks of age. Diets were based on maize or on sorghum and had ratios of metabolizable energy to protein of 130 or 145:1 initially, changed to 155 or 170:1, respectively, in the finishing period. Protein in starter diets was 20, 22, 24 or 26% reduced to 17, 19, 21 and 23%, respectively, for finishing diets. The percentage of dietary energy which was metabolized increased consistently with increasing dietary protein content, was greater with maize than sorghum, and changed significantly between 5 and 9 weeks
