Abstract

For 100 days 30 commercial pullets which had attained 50% egg production were given a control diet of maize 55, groundnut oilmeal 17, wheat bran 5, rice polishings 12, fish meal 8 and minerals 3%, or were given 4 experimental diets in which 25, 50, 75 or 100% of the dietary maize was replaced by sorghum (CSH-5) grains on an isonitrogenous basis. Tannin in the 5 diets, order as above, was 0.25, 0.32, 0.39, 0.46 and 0.53%; metabolizable energy was 2802, 2713, 2623, 2534 and 2445 kcal/kg. There was no significant difference among groups in mean bodyweight gain, daily feed intake, hen day egg production, egg weight, feed intake/12 eggs, nitrogen retention or Haugh units. Compared with the other groups, yolk index was significantly less with 0 or 100% replacement of maize by sorghum; egg-shell thickness was significantly less with 75 or 100% replacement of maize by sorghum
