Abstract

The movement and persistence of trifop in soil was examined over 2 years, using a sorghum bioassay. In the field, delaying the incorporation of trifop for up to 64 days did not affect its activity in Taloka silt loam in either year. Trifop activity persisted for 63 and 40 days after its application in 1977 and 1978, respectively. In the laboratory, trifop was moved down saturated soil columns 7.5 and 18.5 cm by leaching with 2.5 and 10 cm water respectively. In a controlled environment, trifop at 0.09 p.p.m. wt. inhibited growth in 50% of test plants. Soil treated with trifop at 1 p.p.m. wt. at soil moisture levels of 5, 15 or 25% and incubated at 15 deg C for up to 75 days completely inhibited sorghum growth. Inhibition was reduced with increasing incubation time and increasing temps. up to 35 deg C in soil maintained at 5 and 15% moisture, while inhibition persisted in soil maintained at 25% moisture
